U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Supports PRAD in Solomon’s Island

Members of the Drum Point Flotilla (15-6) marched between the Patuxent High School Navy Junior ROTC and the Calvert High School Army Junior ROTC. Parade spectators expressed their appreciation for the men and women of the Coast Guard Auxiliary by cheering and applauding their service to the boating community.

The primary mission of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, as defined by the Commandant of the Coast Guard, is the promotion of boating safety through education of the boating public.  The members of the Drum Point Flotilla support this mission by providing boating safety training and manning information booths at public events such as the National Night Out and the Prince Frederick State Police Open House.

In addition to their mission of educating the boating public, qualified Flotilla members conduct free vessel safety inspections and patrol waterways to lend assistance to boaters. Drum Point Flotilla members conduct Search and Rescue missions within the Solomon’s Island area weekends and holidays throughout the boating season (May through October).  Their patrol area includes the lower Patuxent River and its tributaries, Solomon’s Harbor and the Chesapeake Bay from the mouth of the Patuxent River north to Drum Point.

The Drum Point Flotilla also mans the Coast Guard Auxiliary Radio Station at Cove Point, providing the radio watch for Flotilla vessels on patrol and interfacing with the Coast Guard stations at Oxford and St. Inigoes, as well as sector Baltimore.
